TRAVEL ENTRY

North Berwick, Scotland - The Rock - 22 June 2003

Returning back to North Berwick to explore the rest of the town. Since public transport around the other sites in North Berwick were almost non-existent, I decided to take the coastal walk that stretches along the beach and past the local golf course to soak up the rugged ocean views I missed so much back when I was in Sydney.

Background

From my readings and surfing of sites about North Berwick, there are obviously more historical sites than just Dirleton Castle. Tantallon Castle is just one of them. However, public transport is virtually non-existent and I would probably need to walk more than an hour through gale-force winds.

Instead, I walked along the beach which stretched from the town centre right to the golf course in the east, only to be bisected by the Seabird centre, the only major tourist attraction in the town. The sand along the beach was rough and littered with shells while numerous rocky reefs that were covered in seaweed and barnacles engulfed the beach. With careful navigation of these reefs, I was rewarded with excellent unobstructed views of the ocean, some neighbouring isles and the distinctive white-coloured island of Bass Rock.

Half an hour later, I found myself on the outer fairways of the golf course where a clearer view of Bass Rock and the coastal town of North Berwick and the extinct volcano of Law Hill in the background. By this time, the winds had picked up slightly and the sky had become overcast and Bass Rock had turned into a dark grey mass. But, with a bit of patience, the wind changed and the sun was able to penetrate through the cloud cover an later, causing Bass Rock to turn back to its familiar white colour.

Knowing that the weather would not improve, I immediately made my way back to the railway station. Maybe another day, or even another lifetime will I experience North Berwick in perfect weather.
