TRAVEL ENTRY

Edinburgh, Scotland - Rapid Ascent - 22 June 2003

Posted by Edmond on Wednesday, July 23, 2003 · Comments (2)

Took a quick tour inside the Scott Monument to pass my time before leaving for North Berwick. Unfortunately, today was cloudy and hazy but most of Edinburgh's important sights could still be seen, such as Edinburgh Castle and Nelson's Monument.

Background

I began to question myself whether North Berwick would have been the best idea, with the first train coming at 10:30am and every hour after that. Doesn't make much sense when many of the attractions open from 9:30 am. As it was still very early in the morning, I decided to climb up the Scott monument.

Today was quite hazy with large areas of fog covering Edinburgh. However, much of the Old town and Edinburgh Castle could still be seen, but Nelson's monument, Calton hill and Hollyrood Park were a bit harder to spot. On a clear day, I imagine you could see more, including right down to the Firth of Forth in the north. Nevertheless, the climb up the narrow stairwell of 280 or so steps was well worth the effort, and good exercise as well. Surprisingly, going back down proved more frustrating since I sometimes had to give way to the tourists coming up the narrow staircase.
