TRAVEL ENTRY

Lucerne, Switzerland - Soul in the Water - 21 April 2003

Seebrucke bridge to Lidostrasse and back along the outside of Musegg Wall. Since the lake cruise and climb up to Rigi Kulm was totally wasted by the bad weather, I spent some time walking around the bank of Lake Lucerne seeking some sort of resolution to such a disappointing trip.

Background

With the low level cloud and showers hanging around the mountains of Lucerne, I felt that I was suddenly running out of things to do. The Rigi shrouded in rainclouds, the peak of Pilatus no longer visible, things looked depressing. After some thought, I decided the only thing was to walk along the lake to calm my frustration.

After grabbing some quick lunch, I went back out and walked along the north side of the lake towards Lidostrasse. Already the rain had eased, and the weather looked like it might clear. Instead of feeling content about the improving connditions, I felt angry that the rain and snow had not stopped sooner at Weggis.

In the end, it was the views of Lake Lucerne and its wildlife that had kept me sane. The calming affect of the lake washed the disappointment away as some Crested Grebes cleaned themselves. As I walked along, a small crowd had gathered around a nesting swan. Further on, a family of ducklings hiding among the reeds. Seeing this made me reflect on the abundance of life contained in and around the lake and how much of it calls the lake home. Even through bad and good weather, which was quite reassuring.

Later, I walked back to Lucerne, around the outside of Musegg Wall, disappointed that nothing had really gone my way today, but happy that I had walked along the lake. I suppose the path along the lake and the Musegg Wall was the only route worth taking today, and not the cold "Queen of the Mountains" as I looked out to Lucerne and up to the clearing sky from the bottom of the Zyt Tower.

Technical

Canon EOS 300V with 28-90mm USM lense. 75-300mm USM for the Great crested grebes (a magnifier or fast 400mm would have helped as they are quite tiny birds). Kodak Portra NC 400.
