TRAVEL ENTRY

Rigi, Switzerland - Snow Queen - 21 April 2003

Posted by Edmond on Thursday, May 8, 2003 · Comments (0)

Early trip to Lake Lucerne, Weggis and the Rigi Kulm. All connecting trips went as planned, unfortunately the weather was not on my side today. Winter seemed to have returned as I trawled through the sleet and soggy snow around the Rigi Kulm.

Background

I was surprised to find rain coming down in Lucerne after the clear spell yesterday. But after some thought, I decided to go on the lake cruise to Weggis in case this could be my last trip to Lucerne. Unfortunately, the weather did not seem to get better.

Through the pouring rain, the paddle steamer cruised from stop to stop before finally arriving at Weggis. I could have got off to Vitznau, but the weather had sapped my enthusiasm to do more exploring. Nevertheless, my short hike up to the cable car station enabled me to see most of the town, including some miserable-looking sheep in a household backyard.

The rest of the trip up to Rigi Kulm was shrouded in fog from the low cloud cover. Not surprisingly, upon arrival, there was not much to see, other than the restaurant. Looking around, it appeared the "Queen of the Mountains" had caught a cold today. Nevertheless, I was able to brave the cold, snowy conditions and walk around the restaurant. I guess this is one case in Switzerland where taking the high ground just isn't worth the money and effort.
