Final day in Venice with a walk around the Cannaregio and San Croce area of Venice. From the markets near Ponte Delle Guglie to the quietness of the Jewish Ghetto and the square of Campo della Madonna dell' Orto.

Background

As it was my final day in Venice, I left this area for the last day since I was staying in the area near the peace and quiet Campo San Geremia, home of the Palazzo Labia and the chruch of Santa Geremia. Across the canal over Ponte delle Guglie, I passed through the busy fruit and vegetable market of Rio Terra San Leonardo.

The noise of the market soon gave way when I arrived at the residential area of Rio Terra Farsetti, before heading west along Fondetta degli Ormensi to the Jewish Ghetto. The area in and around the Jewish Ghetto and Ormensi was not as elegant as the other areas of Venice but it was definitely very quiet and there was a more communal atmosphere with the presence of workboats along the canals and labourers going about their daily lives.

A few blocks north through Cavour Larga and Casa del Tintoretta is the the church of Madonna dell' Orto, a structure that seemed to be out of place with the communal atmosphere with its decorative facade and tall belltower. I was also surprised to find two beautiful palaces, Palazzo Mastelli and Palazzo Contarini de Zaffo.

I decided to cheat and cross the Fondetta Nuove by taking the vaporetto from the Orto vaporetto stop. Fondetta Nuove provides a clear view of San Michele island and its island walls. Then, to finish off my last day, I caught the vaporetto back to the Ferrovia stop to take in a final view of the Grand Canal from Ponte dei Scalzi and to be greeted once again by the familiar noises of the boats and tourists around the canal.
