Late morning first stop in Tuscany before Florence. Unlike the main city, the Campo dei Miracoli was more interesting with the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa, the frescoes inside the Duomo and the striking facade of the Baptistry.
Background
Just 10 minutes by Taxi from the airport and a few minutes from the railway station, the Campo dei Miracoli seemed the logical place for a first stop. Furthermore, I packed everything into one medium-sized backpack, making the tour around the Campo dei Miracoli much easier.
The belfry of the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa was undergoing renovation. but the area facing away from the Duomo was clear of scaffolding making picture-taking ideal. I still had to place my camera over a temporary fence to get a clear shot with the help of some tourists. I presumed the fence was erected for safety reasons - historically it had continued to lean even while it was being constructed.
Moving from the Leaning Tower, vivid frescoes can be seen inside the dome interior of the Duomo - although it was fairly dark inside the Duomo. Outside the Duomo, the marbled facade is elaborately decorated with knots, flowers and animals while frescoes decorated the top of each doorway.
Finally, I could not ignore the gothic figures and spires that decorate the Baptistry facade. I stood between the Baptistry and Duomo facade in amazement thinking about the time and attention the artists must have given to building and designing the buildings in the Campo dei Miracoli.
